Android 2.2 Froyo In Testing; Google I/O Release Tipped
By Chris Davies
Wednesday, Apr 21st 2010
- Google are tipped to be already testing the newest build of Android, “Froyo” 2.2, on devices, with a release predicted to coincide with the Google I/O developer conference on May 19th.  Android and Me sifted through their visitor records and turned up numerous logs for Android 2.2. devices; they also apparently heard from separate sources that Google are indeed trialling the updated software, prior to an OTA firmware update for the Nexus One.  Among the changes expected are multi-color trackball notifications, more available RAM to the user, and fixes that address persistent touchscreen glitches.

Froyo is also believed to allow more access to OpenGL ES 2.0 for developers, potentially permitting better gaming graphics, together with introducing the JIT compiler and perhaps even unlocking the Nexus One’s rumored FM radio hardware.  While the Nexus One seems guaranteed to get Android 2.2 Froyo, there’s also speculation that the Motorola DROID will receive the update at the same time; that’s based on the fact that Google will be giving out both Nexus One and DROID handsets to attendees of Google I/O.

will I need to have 2.1 installed before getting 2.2?  I have not yet received 2.1 and understand there were issues/problems with the update.  What is the status?

I read that if you are roaming - you won't get the update.  You might swing by Verizon and get it updated.  As far as issues/problems with 2.1 - that is news to me.

Well after watching the second day of the Google I/o I had to wake up from the comma the cool new features of android 2.2 are bringing. But I was dissapointed to see no motorola droids being demod on, they also didn't mention any thing about the droid. But there's sites like PCworld that say we're getting the update at the same time as the nexus one. Which is in june. Any thoughts on this?

- Google's latest treat for Android phones, Froyo Android 2.2 will be available to Motorola Droid and Nexus One phones in June.  It was announced this morning at Google I/O in San Franisco for latest froyo android updates.

The Android users will definitely be happy with this update which is also known as Froyo because it delivers faster performance.  It can be used for tethering/mobile hotspot and of course, Flash support.

This will be first time that a Android device will have full Flash support.  According to a Pcworld.com editor the new feature has a couple of issues.

The introduction of the Flash will increase the gaming potential of the Android platform.  It will increase the speed of the game on Android-run devices.  Farmville fans must be happy to know that the social networking game is also Flash-based.

But not all sites will operate quickly on this application for example the kid's educational site Ecoda Zoo moved painfully slow, reported the Pcworld.com editor.

- One of the best things about Google’s new Android 2.2 Froyo operating system, is that it comes with support for tethering and wireless hotspot abilities.  We have a report for you to read now, which hints that free tethering may be available for some handsets.

As reported from Phandroid, we have now learned that the support of tethering within Android 2.2 handsets will be down to the carrier.  They will be in charge in terms of fees, although Phandroid states that the Nexus One and Motorola Droid could get free tethering support since they are directly tied to Google Experience.

A particularly worrying fact for consumers though, is that carriers have the ability to disable tethering on 2.2 if they so wish to do so.

While tethering is obviously a great addition, you should expect it to come at high costs per month.

- You have to love the careful wording of any company out there. But, to be honest, this one from Motorola seems to ring a little differently. Almost like a different tone. Maybe that’s just because we have way too much faith, or hope. Either way, we reached out to Motorola, looking for a comment pertaining to future updates to their devices and how that all relates to Android 2.2, or Froyo  if you prefer. And believe it or not, it’s good news.

“We’re excited to see Google’s news of the next version of the Android operating system and look forward to integrating it on our Android-based devices as it’s made available to the open source community.”

While I can’t comment on specifics, we do expect DROID by Motorola users will receive Android 2.2 as a software upgrade in the near future.”

There’s something to take away from this right from the start. They’re looking forward to integrating it in their Android-based devices. Yes, this could be just the standard PR talk, and basically “beating around the bush,” but here we are again hoping beyond hope that it means the MOTOBLUR devices out there aren’t being left out to pasture.

As for the DROID by Motorola, it gets a bit more buttoned down, but not much. They’re looking at upgrading the software in the “near future,” and all we can say at this point, is that better be sooner than later. Of course, Android 2.1, for all intents and purposes, just hit the DROID, so maybe we’re wishing on the stars to think that it could come sooner than, say, a month from now?

We know that the Nexus One is first in line for the update, and that HTC is planning to release Android 2.2 some time by the end of the year, so at least we have some kind of answer now about how the DROID stands in all of this. We’re still prodding our way around the folks at Verizon Wireless, hoping that we can dig out a far more detailed answer from them, so stay tuned.

[Thanks, Motorola!]

Hearing Google say that Android 2.2 would be filtering out to the Nexus One in short order was no huge shock -- after all, it's Google's first smartphone. But for those who purchased Motorola's first heavy-hitter since the RAZR, it looks as if they'll be close behind in enjoying the spoils. According to a Motorola spokesperson quoted at Slashgear (full statement is past the break), the company is expecting the original Droid to get Android 2.2 "in the near future," though he / she wouldn't go so far as to provide specifics beyond that. Better still, the same person stated that Motorola is excited about Froyo in general, and it's "looking forward to integrating it on [the firm's] Android-based devices as [the software] is made available." We hate to read too deeply into anything, but "devices" sure gets our digits tingling.

[Thanks, Alex]

- By now you’ve probably heard about the latest Google operating system, 2.2, otherwise known as Froyo which was announced at the recent Google I/O conference. Many of you can’t wait to get the upgrade and there is good news now for Motorola Droid owners among you.

A report on Product Reviews by Alan Ng, sourced from Phandroid, says that the software upgrade of Google’s Android OS 2.2, has been confirmed as coming for the Motorola Droid. There is no firm date yet, all we know at the moment is it will be “in the near future.”

The story also tell us that the update will be available on the HTC Desire from June 23, still some time away, so we’re wondering if Motorola Droid users may get the upgrade first? If you want to know more about Android 2.2, take a look at our earlier recap about it.
